Cashew Nuts and Its Health Benefits

Cashew (Anacardium Occidentale)

The Cashew nut or Kaju is a popular ingredient present in various Indian dishes. Cashews are kidney – shaped seeds sourced from the cashew tree. Cashews are native to Brazil and introduced by colonists to Africa and India. It is available round the year and the nuts have a great shelf life if stored properly. Cashews have a rich nutty flavour, similar to almonds and peanuts. They can be consumed raw, roasted or salted.

Health Benefits

  • Contains essential fatty acid, vitamins E and K, minerals, calcium, copper, potassium, magnesium, zinc and folate. Also contains fibres, proteins and carbohydrates.
  •  Immunity booster – Rich in zinc and vitamins that keep us healthy. Zinc is an immune boosting compound, vital for basic cell processes. A regular intake of zinc and vitamins may provide us with the required amount of zinc and vitamins that ultimately enhance our immunity.
  • Helps strengthen bones due to its high mineral content. Also with the presence of copper and calcium that gives strength to our bones and make them stronger.
  • Good for eye health due to the presence of zeaxanthin and lutein which are antioxidants that protect UV rays.
  • Helps lower blood pressure since they are rich in healthy unsaturated fats and minerals like magnesium, potassium and L- arginine. It reduces blood pressure drastically by dilating the blood vessels.
  • Prevents and controls diabetes and is a good source of fibre which helps to prevent sugar spike.
